Good morning all!
Today I want to discuss the concept of “defunding”. Of course the discussion over “defunding” has largely been around defunding police, so I will address that over the larger concept of defunding anything.
In any large organization, including the police, there are some bad people. For instance, if you work for Apple, or Facebook, or Microsoft, or Caterpillar, or the Post Office, etc., etc., etc. . . you can find bad people working for good companies/entities. Those bad apples are usually very few. For those of you who support “defunding”, I guess we should look at taking away funds or even closing down these entities as well. After all, they have a few bad people working there, doing bad things–guaranteed.
So now that we’ve established that truth (Old Guy’s Truth), we can establish how stupid it is. Just because there are some bad apples, you don’t shut down the whole operation. The vast majority of the people working in this world (including in police departments) do a great job. Especially with the police, they are commissioned to protect the communities they serve from people who would otherwise break our laws and diminish our safety. They need MORE money, not less to do their job. What I find interesting and actually reprehensible is how in some cities the leaders have now prevented the police from doing their job. Worse, those leaders are PROTECTING THE CRIMINALS who are destroying businesses (looting and burning down establishments). Even if they arrest someone after these criminal activities, they are releasing them right away to go out and commit more crimes. So the innocent are left unprotected, while the criminals are being protected. How in the world does that make any sense, and how did we get here? I would suggest strongly that anyone living in a city where this is happening needs to vote OUT their current administration that is allowing it.
“Defund”? Absolutely not.
